Woodland retreat

Seriously DROOLING over the March/April issue of Lonny.
Too much amazing-ness to feature just one abode,
so I'll be highlighting all of my favorites over the next couple of weeks.
If you can't wait, or want to check out the fabulous photos in all their full-size glory,
be sure to check out Lonny's spring issue - {HERE}.

First up?
This amazing "woodland retreat" in the LA hills.

I am obsessed with homes that incorporate nature into the interiors.
It just feels so fresh and so clean (clean)!

This space especially brings the forest-meets-African desert vibe to life.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the feature...

I cannot get over the pristine look of these concrete floors.
They almost look like marble.

I crave floor-to-ceiling windows.  It makes you feel like you're sitting outdoors, right in the comfort of your very own living room.  Don't even get me started on all of that refreshing natural light!

I am loving their closet bar
complete with the ever-popular and stylish "Scalamandre" wallpaper -
the perfect pop of color and fun for small spaces.

In case you want some for yourself - {HERE}.

And this dining room?! I DIE.
The lights!  The plants!  That giant wall art!

The contrasting walls/ceiling!  And those chairs?!?!  Adore.

Even the sleeping quarters reek of peace and calm.

Finally, some tips to re-create these "woodland" looks in your very own home:

That last tip is especially spot-on, no?

I cannot WAIT to incorporate more of these elements into my living space.
Not to mention that this spread makes me even more excited for the lovely spring weather, with all it's sunshine and crisp breezes.

(sigh)

What do you think?

Citrus-herb salmon

Pan-seared Citrus Herb Salmon
Original recipe via "The Comfort of Cooking"

Ever since I fell in love with salmon en papillote {HERE},
I've been reluctant to try any other salmon recipe.
But, I'm glad I tried this one.
This dinner came together in about 15 minutes.
No excuses not to cook healthy, people!

The only thing I did differently was cook it all on the stove top
(versus finishing it in the oven).
Once I flipped it, I basted it in the butter sauce,
added the fresh-squeezed lemon juice,
then lowered the heat and placed a lid over it to steam-cook the rest of the way,
~ 5-7 minutes, depending on the thickness of your salmon fillet(s).

I served it with quick-cooking whole wheat couscous,
chock full of dried cranberries, toasted almonds, and extra lemon zest/juice & parsley.
YUM.

Add some amazing Greek salad from the deli counter!

Dinner in an instant!
Enjoy.

Happy (spring) weekend!

Windows cracked open
to let in the cool breezes & scent of fresh hyacinth,
as a few spring showers fall down onto the roof...

enjoying homemade pumpkin pancakes & cafe au laits,
under down blankets,
savoring the last few days as a family of two,
listening to this fitting tune on repeat:

And eventually having some fun "playing house" in the garden!

Lone daffodil in the gravel pit  soon-to-be veggie garden.  Cute!

In addition to what is already sprouting,
found out we can expect lilies, ferns, peonies, moon plants, & hostas -
just to name a few!
(Hopefully with the help of Google I can develop a green thumb overnight.)

I have some extra herb seed packets (basil, cilantro, & rosemary)...
might as well throw them into the mix!
(That is, until I can be sure we are frost-free to plant my potted herbs and tomatoes.)

Gotta love surprise perennials!

Contemplating whether or not to get a fire pit for the upcoming warm nights??
(Is that a resounding "YES!" I hear?)
And dreaming about these gorgeous Viva Terra chairs for outdoor seating...

All the while feeling exactly like this:

"Feel the tide turning..."

Life is good.

Friday favorite things

1.
Ponchos, spring-style.
I'm talking creamy, cashmere deliciousness for those crisp early spring days.
I'll take this one, please:

(Now if only I knew where it were from!)

2.
Monochromatic, over-sized art.
I especially love this idea in blue hues.
Cases in point:

(Hey if you're not lucky enough to live right on the water,
why not make yourself delusional?)

3.
Pretty scents for small spaces.

Word.
Thinking I might like my closet (and  all it's contents) to smell like this.
Roses + Black currant
Classy without smelling like an old lady!
Perhaps it'd mask any malodorous scents from post-baby days sans-showers?!
(Plus I have a gift certificate, so I wouldn't feel too guilty about the price.)

4.
Dark chocolate ice cream.

This one appears to be on the super creamy side.  Yummo!
I had a taste of dark chocolate ice cream via Milwaukee's Purple Door Creamery
at the Yelp "Brew City Bash" a couple weeks ago.
It was AMAZE BALLS.
But here's a recipe I can make at home, sans the ice cream maker!
{HERE} via Cafe Fernando by way of Cup of Jo.

5.
"11 Ways to Uncomplicate Your Life"

There isn't anyone I know who couldn't benefit from at least one of these tips.
{HERE}

TGIF, m'dears!
And happy weekend to you!

Diane von Furstenberg, mini style.

DVF is everywhere.
First {HERE}.
Now at Baby Gap!

Too much?
Or, too cute?

From jumpers to her iconic prints...

...and of course, there are a variety of her signature wrap dresses!

Priced $50 and up.

While they are unarguably adorable,
(and reasonably priced for DVF)
what are your thoughts on designer duds for wee ones?
Worth the splurge?  Or save the money?

If you think the former, you better hurry...
the collection is limited and selling out quickly!

Mirror, mirror on the wall

Oh how I love what you bring to a space!

Light reflection.
Architectural interest.
You make rooms appear larger.
You give us vain people ample opportunity to make sure we're looking fresh.

Some of my favorites...

(P.S.  How great were those slouchy accent chairs?!)

I would never leave either of these delicious tubs.

You can find some pretty gorgeous mirrors at vintage and antique stores.
(Or, more reasonably priced at Home Goods!)

And don't be afraid to get crafty and tailor them to your aesthetic/needs.
All you need is a $3 can of spray paint and some creativity.

Example:

So bright and fun...wouldn't it look fab in a kids' playroom?!
Happy mirror shopping/renovating!

Nesting? Or spring cleaning?

Or, just plain un-diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder?

Here's what I have been up to 10 days post-boards...

  • finished the nursery the day after the exam (pics to come soon)
  • scrubbed the windows (all 24 of them!)
  • organized my 5+ year collection of magazine recipe clippings
  • deep-cleaned the fridge & stove
  • scrubbed the showers
  • dusted all the nooks & crannies (including each individual blind)
  • assembled a grocery list for easy-to-make meals
  • stocked the pantry & freezer of items to make said easy-to-make meals
  • made several cookie doughs and one casserole (to freeze for easy baking)
  • washed (and ironed) all baby clothes & linens
  • arranged baby clothes in closet according to age
  • sterilized all baby toys/teethers & milk storage containers
  • flipped and cleaned all mattresses
  • checked/changed batteries in smoke & carbon monoxide detectors
  • began baby scrapbook
  • packed mine and baby's hospital bags
  • wrote birthing plan
  • set up car seat and ordered additional base
  • researched and ordered digital SLR camera and video monitor (to spy on baby)
  • began organizing office/assembling some serious craft storage bins
  • dropped off all winter dry cleaning
  • arranged dermatology, eye, and dental appointments...for me and the huzz
  • performed mini-workouts daily (i.e. walking the 'hood, 10-minute arm routines, pelvic tilts, etc.)
  • filled out all possible NP license applications
  • updated resume
  • drafted requests for letters of rec for future job applications
  • prepared several advanced blog posts (for around the time the baby arrives)
  • picked out a couple weeknight date spots (read:  bars with fab outdoor patios + happy hours) where babies cannot go
  • stocked up on post-hospital mommy & daddy essentials (i.e. TP, laundry detergent, reading materials, wine)
  • scheduled a spa mani/pedi

Whew!
What's up next, you ask?
Steam-mopping the floors and learning how to use the new camera, of course!

Here's a little pictorial of what's been done so far...

With enough canned beans, tomatoes, low-sodium/fat-free cream of condensed "whatever" soups, brown rice & pasta, and frozen veggies, fruits, chicken breasts & ground meats, there are LOTS of quick, easy, & relatively healthy meals possible.

Example:
Cheesy Chicken Penne
with Spinach, Mushrooms, & Sun-dried Tomatoes
One for tonight, one to freeze (in disposable bakeware) for easy baking (up to 3 months later)!  How great is that?!

And it's always nice to have a hot cookie only 10 minutes away!
(Especially for baby visitors!) :)
Mint Chocolate Chip & Cake Batter Sugar Cookies on deck.

And here's one of the Tracy Anderson 10-minute arm workouts.
(She's the one responsible for Madonna's and Gwyneth's rockin' guns.)
Warning:  If choreography is not your thing, this will be really tough to follow.
My advice?  Just pretend you are Pauly D on the Jersey Shore and you'll be fine.
"Gimme a beat!"

* Notes to self:
  1. I am aware that it is not recommended to stand on ladders and/or lift heavy objects when you are 38-ish weeks pregnant and do not make it a regular habit.  (Nor do I advise this for other preggo's.)  But sometimes when I get on a roll, I just can't help my OCD self.
  2. I would also not advise a full-body dermatology scan when you are 38 weeks with child.  While doing so at some point in time is certainly a healthy practice (I mean, how else would you know if you had a melanoma brewing in your b-hole?!), it was not good for the self-esteem to stand naked under fluorescent lighting while someone (and their assistant) scoured every square inch of my behemoth pale body.
  3. Likewise, do not do Tracy Anderson arms routine in the company of others.

However, it is  just generally good healthy practice to do some of these activities,
at least annually.  (They don't call it "spring cleaning" for no reason.)
Example:  Cleaning Mattresses.
If you don't know how to do it, see {HERE}.

(Hot damn, I love baking soda.)
If you suffer from asthma and/or seasonal allergies, this is a must!!
Indoor allergens are often the most serious culprits of your suffering.
Dust mites and molds, people, dust mites and molds.
I don't care how clean you are, your house and beds have them.
(Note: You could apply the same method to your furniture if they're slip covered.)

And functioning smoke detectors simply save lives.
Check yours today.

My question to you...

Does the above list equate to nesting?
Or, for those of you who know me, is this just my regular "final exam is done, time to get shit done I've been putting off " cleaning and organizing regime?
Who knows.

But considering I'm already dilated and effaced,
I'm guessing a little nesting and "you better hurry up and get your ducks in a row, girl" is also at play.

Essentially any day now!!
Better learn to relax (and rest) while I can.

(deep breaths)

Happy spring!

Today is officially the first day of spring!
Signs of new life, that this wondrous season is truly upon us,
abound.

Cheery daffodils and hyacinth sprouting in the garden...

Robins chirping...

Sunshine and warm temps continue to be in the forecast...
(even though expected to cool to still-higher-than-average 50's next week)

Even my baby bun's ready to come out of the oven,
just in time for Easter...

(Doesn't he look like a little basketball lately? Well, maybe not so "little" - ha!)

Hope the sun is shining wherever you are today!

xoxo, b
